A Night in with Eloghosa Osunde

7 April 2022 – 14 April 2022

To mark the publication of Vagabonds!

Lagos is a city for all… you share this place with flesh and not-flesh, and it's just as much their city as it is yours.

Join Nigerian writer and visual artist, Eloghosa Osunde, as she shares her debut novel – an exuberant tribute to the 'vagabonds' who live their lives in the margins. In conversation for this virtual event, she’ll explore how her freewheeling takedown of Nigerian capitalism takes readers on a twilight tour of the spirits and misfits of Lagos, inspired by the real, legal definition of 'vagabonds' found in Nigeria's Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act. She’ll also consider why it was important for her to write a defiant and inventive tribute to all those who live their lives joyfully and unabashedly in the face of the hypocrisy of the law.

Eko, the spirit of Lagos, and his loyal minion named Tatafo weave trouble through the streets of Lagos and through the lives of the 'vagabonds' powering modern Nigeria: the unseen, the displaced, queer people, unloved women and children. In this world, women slip in and out of their bodies and their skins, men lose their heads and their souls; they all draw in the city's chaotic, dark energy and breathe it back out again, creating new ways of living in the process.

Don’t miss this thought-provoking and exhilarating event as Eloghosa pokes a sharp stick at modern Nigerian capitalism and corruption, whilst celebrating all those for whom life itself is a form of resistance.

‘You don’t read this novel. You swan dive into it, then gasp in wonder’ Marlon James, author of A Brief History of Seven Killings
