Bryan Washington

22 March 2021

From the winner of the 2020 Dylan Thomas Prize comes a true tour de force: wryly funny and gently devastating, Bryan Washinton’s debut novel Memorial (for which the film rights have been bought by A24, producers of Moonlight) is about family in all its strange forms, becoming who you're supposed to be, and the outer limits of love.

Benson and Mike are two young guys who have been together for a few years - good years - but now they're not sure why they're still a couple. There's the sex, sure, and the meals Mike cooks for Benson, and, well, they love each other.

But when Mike finds out his estranged father is dying in Osaka just as his acerbic Japanese mother, Mitsuko, arrives for a visit, Mike picks up and flies across the world to say goodbye. In Japan he undergoes an extraordinary transformation, discovering the truth about his family and his past, while back home, Mitsuko and Benson are stuck living together as unconventional roommates - an absurd domestic situation that ends up meaning more to each of them than they ever could have predicted...

Join the author in conversation as he explores the timely themes of his novel: race, sexuality, grief, trauma, and class. Bryan will consider his inspiration for the story, writing from places and positions that we haven’t historically seen in literature, and the importance of the first-person narrative to the plot – the art of shifting perspectives so that the reader is able to inhabit the story from two sides.

Funny and profound, this is an evening you do not want to miss about everything in life that matters.

‘A new vision for the 21st century novel... This book made me happy.’ Ocean Vuong
